Papillon: A Sculptural and Functional Coffee Table

Papillon is a coffee table that transcends traditional design boundaries. It seamlessly blends art and functionality, creating a unique piece that is both visually striking and practical. The inspiration for this design came from the desire to reconcile the concept of a self-sufficient sculptural object with the need for storage space.

From a sculptural standpoint, Papillon is a captivating work that captures the essence of foliage in motion. It plays with the delicate balance between order and chance, movement and stillness. The design features a single, flat element that is transformed into a spatial structure, providing inclined storage space beneath a glass top.

What sets Papillon apart is its ability to maintain its artistic purity while serving a functional purpose. The base elements, reminiscent of leaves and open books, create a random harmony that subtly changes as reading material accumulates inside. This design ensures that the table always maintains a loose order, even when filled with books and magazines.

Papillon is not only visually stunning but also highly customizable. The glass top comes in different shapes and can be combined with base elements of various colors and quantities. This allows for a personalized touch, ensuring that the coffee table seamlessly integrates into any interior design scheme.

The realization of Papillon involves the use of high-quality materials. The top is made of 10mm tempered glass, providing durability and a sleek finish. The base is constructed from 18mm plywood, birch, and is available in either a high-gloss or satin finish. The combination of these materials creates a harmonious blend of elegance and functionality.

With dimensions ranging from 1400 x 850mm to 1100 x 1100mm, Papillon offers versatility in size. The table stands at a height of 360mm, making it the perfect addition to any living room or lounge area. The design is delivered in flat packages, with each package containing one base element. This ensures easy assembly and transportation.

Oliver Bals began conceptualizing Papillon in 2010 while working on the interior design of his wife's dental surgery. The prototype was completed in 2011 and has since undergone refinements and small-scale production. The design has received accolades, including the Iron A' Design Award in 2015, recognizing its practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial standards.
